SPECIAL PROJECT OF NEW ERA ORCHESTRA & ODESSA CLASSICS

New Era Orchestra
Tatiana Kalinichenko (conductor, art director)
Joshua Bell (violin)

Joshua Bell is one of the brightest violinists of our time. Winner of GRAMMY, OPUS KLASSIK, Gramophone, Avery Fischer awards, exclusive artist of SONY, Bell has performed with almost every leading orchestra in the world. Since 2011 Bell has been Music Director of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, London Chamber Orchestra.

Bell also combines a career as a brilliant academic musician with participation in various television programs (including Sesame Street), recording music for popular films - in particular, it was Bell who performed the music of John Corigliano for the soundtrack to the film Red Violin (Corigliano specifically thanked Bell for inspirational performance at the Academy Award for Best Original Music); Bell's violin was later featured on the soundtrack for the film Angels and Demons .

As part of Bell's inclination to participate in events that are not quite usual for a major academic musician, one can also consider an experiment conducted with his participation on January 12, 2007 at the initiative of the Washington Post : for 43 minutes Bell played in the lobby of a metro station in Washington under the guise of an ordinary street musician. Out of a thousand people who passed by, only one recognized him by sight and only five or six made a special impression on him. At the same time, Bell earned only $32. This experiment was reflected in a detailed essay by the famous journalist Gene Weingarten, who reflected on this example about the nature of beauty and its place in the life of modern man.

New Era Orchestra (art director and chief conductor Tatiana Kalinichenko) is an independent Ukrainian orchestra that has become one of the most iconic musical groups in the country over the 13 years of its existence. International cooperation is one of the priorities of the orchestra's creative activity. The team's portfolio includes more than 20 successfully completed projects of the highest level. Tatiana Kalinichenko, art director and chief conductor of the orchestra, was the first in Ukraine to initiate joint projects with such outstanding musicians as Joshua Bell (violin, USA), Sarah Chang (violin, USA), Christoph Zitzen (percussion, Austria), Avi Avital (mandolin Israel), Maurice Steger (recorder, Switzerland) and others. At the same time, the orchestra actively promotes young talented Russian soloists of the new generation.

"Nonconformists"

Виставка в рамках фестивалю Odessa Classics

Curator - Anatoliy Dymchuk

Opening of the exhibition June 1, at 15:00

Yuriy Yegorov Fund in collaboration with the Odesa Museum of Western and Eastern Art presents an exhibition dedicated to the Odesa nonconformist movement. The exhibition is held within the festival Odesa classics.

Nonconformism of the 70's – 80's of the ХХ century is one of the most important phenomena in the artistic life of Odesa. One of the first public informal exhibitions in the Soviet Union is associated with this group of artists. We are talking about the action Sychyk + Khrushchyk, which took place in the center of Odesa in 1967. A series of apartment exhibitions organized by nonconformists during the 1970s became an important step in the development of freedom of speech during the late Soviet period.

Despite the opposition to official Soviet art, which was a commonplace for many Ukrainian artists of the time, the work by Odesa nonconformists is marked by a special lyricism, a departure from direct political statements and appeal to universal values. According to researchers, the artists from Odesa are characterized by a combination of innovation with a return to the origins, in particular to the icon-painting tradition and the achievements of the Odesa Society of South Russian Artists.

Works from private collections and funds of the Museum of the Odesa Modern Art will be presented in five halls of Odesa Museum of Western and Eastern Art. The project will include works by Olexandr Anufriev, Valeriy Basanets, Oleg Voloshynov, Yuriy Yegorov, Viktor Maryniuk, Yevgen Rachmanin, Volodymyr Strelnikov, Valentyn Khrushch, Anatoliy Shopin, Lyudmyla Yastreb and others. The show will feature the iconic works of nonconformists of the period of apartment exhibitions, as well as their late and contemporary works.
