In 1999, a group of young virtuosos from various cultures came together in Brussels around a musical score, united by a shared passion for chamber music.

The distinctive sound of the Brussels Chamber Orchestra and their genuine interest in deep exploration and experimentation as a group are the result of this initial coming together. Indeed, this ensemble combines a particularly rich mix of nationalities, cultures, and musical heritages, creating a dynamic interplay between contrasting musical belief systems, styles, and traditions.

The absence of a conductor encourages musicians to fully engage personally and transforms the orchestral texture into true chamber music. The repertoire includes works from Bach to Mozart and Britten, from Elgar to Bartók, Hindemith, and Schönberg.

The orchestra has commissioned and premiered many new works by young outstanding composers and constantly seeks new repertoire to discover. The BCO has performed with some of the most distinguished musicians of our time, such as Ivry Gitlis, Igor Oistrakh, Maxim Vengerov, Gavriel Lipkind, Janine Jansen, Sergey Krylov, Pierre Amoyal, Lorenzo Gatto, Dora Schwarzberg, Erasmo Capilla, Boris Berezovsky, Gilles Apap, David Cohen, Michael Guttman, Elian Rodrigues, Plamena Mangova, Tatiana Vassilieva, Justus Grimm, Richard Stoltzman, Walter Boeykens, and singer Daniela de Niese.

The BCO has also achieved success in other musical styles, such as flamenco with Amparo Cortés, jazz with Michel Bisceglia and the “Pierre Anckaert Quintet,” the music of Pablo Villeuendas, Jewish folklore with Kletzstory, Chinese folklore with George Gao (erhu), and French chanson with Maureen.

These experiences enrich the BCO’s ability to significantly participate in multicultural projects, adding local music programs to classical tours in countries such as Italy, Spain, France, Germany, Norway, Mexico, Taiwan, Japan, the USA, and recently China.

The Brussels Chamber Orchestra is actively involved in creating and supporting educational and outreach projects and has been honored with the title of artistic ambassador by the “Yehudi Menuhin Foundation”.
